Chapter 6

“I was born in Boston,” Dominic told Liv.

She nodded slowly, then waved for him to go on when he fell silent. “That’s all I get?”

“You’re going to make this extremely difficult, aren’t you?”

She beamed at him. “You broke my phone and burned down my bar. Yeah, I’m going to make this really, really difficult. So, Boston. What did you do in Boston?”

“I was born into the family business,” he said slowly as his eyes darkened. “The family business being the docks. Running them, taking care of product coming in and out. Maintaining order with the families doing business at the docks. See where I’m going with this?”

“Am I supposed to?”

“The mob, Liv, I’m a son of the fucking mob,” he spat.

Liv blinked, then her jaw dropped. “Shit, really?”

He looked at her like she was slowly going insane. “Yeah, really.”

“Why are you in Phoenix?”

He walked into the room, his eyes wandering over the walls of weapons. She had been taken aback at the sight of such an arsenal in his closet, but a lot of people had guns and weird stuff in their houses. Dominic had done nothing to frighten her, so she wasn’t concerned about him being heavily armed. At the mention of being part of the mob, a few bits and pieces started to fall into place. His demeanor, his cold, hard gaze he had for everyone but her.

“It’s a long story,” he explained. “But I’m going to give you the highlights,” he added when she started to protest. “Ivan Velesk, my father, raised me to be an enforcer for our family.”

“An enforcer?”

Dominic looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but having this conversation. “Hitman. I was trained to be a hitman for the Velesk family and anyone else who paid the right price.” He rubbed at the palm of his hand with this thumb as if trying to get rid of whatever was there. “I’m a killer, have been for years. I’d get a contract, track them down, kill them, and reap the benefits. I’m damn good at my job, too.” He scoffed and turned his back on her. “In the beginning, I just saw it as a job, as my life, the only life I could have. I learned not to feel.”

“Learned to scare the hell out of people with a glare,” Liv commented, and he gave her a look over his shoulder. “What? It’s true. I’ve seen the way people back away from you. It’s impressive.”

“Impressive? It’s not impressive. It’s sickening. Do you have any idea how much blood is on my hands? Any idea at all the number of people I killed?”

“And what?” she shot back. “And you think you can’t be a good guy because of it?”

“I’m not,” he snapped, stalking toward her until he towered over her, his eyes narrowed.

She didn’t budge, not an inch. She tilted her head back and looked him right in the eye. “If you were a bad guy, why did you save me, huh? Why did
