Chapter 6
âI was born in Boston,â Dominic told Liv.
She nodded slowly, then waved for him to go on when he fell silent. âThatâs all I get?â
âYouâre going to make this extremely difficult, arenât you?â
She beamed at him. âYou broke my phone and burned down my bar. Yeah, Iâm going to make this really, really difficult. So, Boston. What did you do in Boston?â
âI was born into the family business,â he said slowly as his eyes darkened. âThe family business being the docks. Running them, taking care of product coming in and out. Maintaining order with the families doing business at the docks. See where Iâm going with this?â
âAm I supposed to?â
âThe mob, Liv, Iâm a son of the fucking mob,â he spat.
Liv blinked, then her jaw dropped. âShit, really?â
He looked at her like she was slowly going insane. âYeah, really.â
âWhy are you in Phoenix?â
He walked into the room, his eyes wandering over the walls of weapons. She had been taken aback at the sight of such an arsenal in his closet, but a lot of people had guns and weird stuff in their houses. Dominic had done nothing to frighten her, so she wasnât concerned about him being heavily armed. At the mention of being part of the mob, a few bits and pieces started to fall into place. His demeanor, his cold, hard gaze he had for everyone but her.
âItâs a long story,â he explained. âBut Iâm going to give you the highlights,â he added when she started to protest. âIvan Velesk, my father, raised me to be an enforcer for our family.â
âAn enforcer?â
Dominic looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but having this conversation. âHitman. I was trained to be a hitman for the Velesk family and anyone else who paid the right price.â He rubbed at the palm of his hand with this thumb as if trying to get rid of whatever was there. âIâm a killer, have been for years. Iâd get a contract, track them down, kill them, and reap the benefits. Iâm damn good at my job, too.â He scoffed and turned his back on her. âIn the beginning, I just saw it as a job, as my life, the only life I could have. I learned not to feel.â
âLearned to scare the hell out of people with a glare,â Liv commented, and he gave her a look over his shoulder. âWhat? Itâs true. Iâve seen the way people back away from you. Itâs impressive.â
âImpressive? Itâs not impressive. Itâs sickening. Do you have any idea how much blood is on my hands? Any idea at all the number of people I killed?â
âAnd what?â she shot back. âAnd you think you canât be a good guy because of it?â
âIâm not,â he snapped, stalking toward her until he towered over her, his eyes narrowed.
She didnât budge, not an inch. She tilted her head back and looked him right in the eye. âIf you were a bad guy, why did you save me, huh? Why did
